Vermicompost is organic waste broken down by earthworms into a dark, crumbly material rich in nutrients and beneficial microbes. On a small farm it converts material you already have — crop residue, cattle dung, kitchen waste — into a soil amendment you would otherwise buy.
It is one of the few farm activities with a genuinely low barrier to entry. The setup cost is small, the labour is light, and the failure modes are few and easy to recognise.
What You Need
- A shaded space — under a tree, a thatch shed, or a simple roof
- Cattle dung, at least two to three weeks old
- Dry crop residue, leaves or straw
- Earthworms — Eisenia fetida is the standard species used
- A watering can and a gunny sack or old cloth for covering
Beds can be built on the ground with brick walls, in a cement tank, or in stacked plastic crates for very small quantities. The ground bed is cheapest and works well.
Setting Up the Bed
A practical size for a small farm is about three metres long, one metre wide and half a metre high. Keep the width at one metre so you can reach the middle from either side without stepping in.
- Base layer — 15 to 20 cm of coarse material: broken twigs, coconut husk, thick crop stalks. This provides drainage and stops the bed going soggy.
- Second layer — 15 cm of partially decomposed dung mixed with dry leaves or straw.
- Moisten thoroughly and leave for a week to let heat escape. This step is skipped most often and kills most worm batches.
- Introduce worms — roughly 1 kg of worms per square metre of bed surface.
- Cover with a gunny sack, jute cloth or a layer of straw to keep it dark and hold moisture.
Why the Waiting Week Matters
Fresh dung heats up sharply as it begins decomposing. Temperatures inside a fresh heap can reach a level that kills earthworms within hours. Letting the material sit and cool for a week before adding worms is the difference between a working bed and a dead one.
Test before adding worms: push your hand into the middle of the heap. If it feels warm rather than cool, wait longer.
Feed and Moisture
Feed: vegetable peels, crop residue, dried leaves, weeds that have not seeded, cattle and goat dung, fruit waste.
Avoid: meat, fish, dairy, oil, cooked food with salt or spice, citrus peel in quantity, onion and garlic waste in quantity, anything treated with pesticide, and glossy printed paper.
Moisture should be like a wrung-out sponge — damp, not dripping. Squeeze a handful: it should hold together and release a drop or two at most. Water lightly every two or three days in summer, less in cool or humid weather. Overwatering is more damaging than underwatering because it drives out air and the worms suffocate or leave.
Timeline
Under reasonable conditions a bed produces usable compost in roughly two to three months. It takes longer in cold weather and where the feed material is coarse.
Compost is ready when it is dark brown to black, crumbly, uniform in texture, and smells of earth rather than of dung. Recognisable pieces of the original material should be mostly gone.
Harvesting Without Losing Worms
Stop watering for two or three days before harvest. Worms move downward as the surface dries.
Then heap the material into small cones in sunlight. Worms retreat to the bottom of each cone. Scrape compost off the top in layers, wait a few minutes, scrape again. What remains at the base is a concentrated mass of worms ready for the next bed.
Sieve the harvested compost to remove undecomposed pieces and any cocoons, and return those to the new bed.
Troubleshooting
- Worms crawling out — usually too wet, too hot, or the feed is too fresh and acidic. Check moisture first.
- Bad smell — the bed has gone anaerobic. Turn it, add dry material, stop watering.
- Ants — the bed is too dry. Water and keep the covering in place.
- Very slow progress — feed is too coarse, or the bed is too cold. Chop material smaller.
Using It
Vermicompost is applied to the soil before sowing or as a top dressing around standing plants. It improves soil structure and water retention as much as it adds nutrients, and those structural benefits accumulate over seasons.
It is not a direct replacement for a full fertiliser programme on a high-demand crop. Treat it as a foundation that reduces how much bought fertiliser you need, rather than as a complete substitute.
