Wheat is India’s main rabi cereal and one of the most forgiving crops to grow — which is precisely why average yields sit well below what the same varieties achieve in trials. The gap is almost entirely management, and most of it comes down to two things: sowing date and irrigation timing.
Sowing Date Matters More Than Almost Anything
Wheat is sensitive to temperature at grain filling. Late-sown wheat runs into rising temperatures in late season, grain filling is cut short, and yield falls. This loss is proportional to delay and cannot be recovered by adding fertiliser or water.
The optimum sowing window differs by region and is set by your state agricultural university. Get the dates for your district from your KVK and treat them as a deadline rather than a suggestion.
If you are forced into late sowing — usually because a kharif crop cleared late — use a variety specifically bred for late sowing, increase the seed rate, and accept that the ceiling is lower. Using a timely-sown variety late is the worst of both options.
Field Preparation
Wheat needs a fine, firm seedbed. Excessive tillage wastes moisture and diesel; too little leaves clods that reduce germination. Two to three passes after a pre-sowing irrigation is typical.
Zero-till drilling directly into rice stubble is now widely practised in the rice-wheat belt. It saves time, allows earlier sowing after a late rice harvest, saves diesel and irrigation water, and eliminates the temptation to burn residue. If a zero-till drill is available through a Custom Hiring Centre in your area, it is worth trying on part of your field.
Seed and Sowing
- Use certified seed, or if using saved seed, treat it before sowing
- Seed treatment with a recommended fungicide protects against seed and soil-borne diseases at very low cost
- Sow with a seed drill at uniform depth rather than broadcasting — line sowing improves plant stand and makes weeding practical
- Depth matters: too deep and emergence is weak, too shallow and the crop dries out

The Critical Irrigation Stages
This is where most yield is won or lost. Wheat has stages at which water stress causes disproportionate damage:
- Crown root initiation — roughly three weeks after sowing. The single most critical irrigation. Missing this one cannot be compensated later
- Tillering
- Jointing
- Flowering
- Milk stage
- Dough stage
If water is limited and you can only give two or three irrigations, prioritise crown root initiation first, then flowering. Farmers who spread limited water evenly across all stages generally do worse than those who concentrate it at the critical ones.
Nutrient Management
Apply based on your soil test, not on habit. As a general principle, nitrogen is split — part at sowing, the remainder applied with irrigations during tillering and jointing. Applying all nitrogen at sowing wastes a large share of it.
Zinc deficiency is common in rice-wheat systems and shows as stunted plants with brown patches on leaves. It is cheap to correct and easy to miss.
Weed Control
Weeds compete most damagingly in the first 30 to 40 days. Phalaris minor is the major grass weed in the northern wheat belt and has developed resistance to several herbicide groups through repeated use of the same chemistry.
The practical response is to rotate herbicide groups between seasons rather than using the same product every year, and to combine chemical control with cultural measures — clean seed, timely sowing, and crop rotation.
Common Problems
- Yellow rust — yellow pustules in stripes on leaves, favoured by cool humid weather. Needs prompt fungicide and resistant varieties
- Lodging — the crop falls over, usually from excess nitrogen, high seed rate, or irrigation before strong wind. Harvest becomes difficult and grain quality drops
- Terminal heat — the consequence of late sowing, seen as shrivelled grain
Harvest
Harvest when grain is hard and the moisture is low enough for safe storage. Harvesting too early leaves grain that must be dried; too late risks shattering and losses to weather.
After threshing, dry properly before storage. Grain that feels dry on the surface but is not fully dry inside is the main cause of storage insect and fungal problems.
