Soil Health Card Scheme: Getting Your Free Soil Report

The Soil Health Card scheme provides farmers with a report on the nutrient status of their soil, along with crop-wise recommendations on how much fertiliser to apply. The testing is done through government soil testing laboratories and the card is issued free or at nominal cost.

The scheme has issued cards to a very large number of farmers. The problem is that a substantial share of those cards are never actually used, because nobody explains how to read them.

What the Card Contains

A Soil Health Card reports twelve parameters:

  • Macronutrients — nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium
  • Secondary nutrient — sulphur
  • Micronutrients — zinc, iron, copper, manganese, boron
  • Physical parameters — pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon

Each is rated on a scale from low to high, and the card carries fertiliser recommendations for the crops commonly grown in your area.

How to Get One

Approach any of these:

  • Your village agriculture extension officer
  • The nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra
  • The district agriculture office
  • A soil testing laboratory directly

Sampling is carried out on a cycle in most states, with staff collecting samples from a defined grid. If a cycle is under way in your village, your sample may be collected without you asking. If not, you can submit a sample yourself.

Collect the sample properly — a badly collected sample gives a report that describes soil you do not have. Take slices from ten to fifteen spots across the field at about 15 cm depth, mix thoroughly, and reduce to about half a kilogram.

Reading the Three Numbers That Matter Most

pH

If pH is outside roughly 6.0 to 7.5, fix that before worrying about anything else. Nutrients become chemically locked at extreme pH regardless of how much fertiliser you add. Acidic soils are treated with lime, alkaline and sodic soils with gypsum. Both take time and both need quantities calculated for your soil, which your KVK can do.

Organic carbon

Usually reported as low across much of India. This is not fixed by fertiliser. It is fixed by farmyard manure, compost, green manure crops, and by returning crop residue to the soil instead of burning it. Improvement is slow and cumulative — you are working on a three-to-five year horizon, not one season.

The nutrient that is actually limiting

Look for what is rated low, not what is rated high. Adding more of a nutrient already at high level does nothing for yield and costs money. The classic finding on farms with a long DAP history is high phosphorus and low nitrogen or zinc.

Turning It Into a Plan

The card gives crop-wise recommendations, but it recommends for a crop, not for your rotation, and it does not know what organic matter you are adding.

Take the card to your extension officer or KVK with three pieces of information: what you grew last season, what you plan to grow, and what manure or compost you apply. The recommendation they give you with that context is considerably more useful than the printed figure alone.

Making the Change Safely

Do not change everything at once. Pick the single largest gap between what the card recommends and what you currently apply, act on that, and keep the rest constant for a season. That way you can tell what worked.

Keep the card. Testing every two to three years and comparing reports shows you whether your practices are building soil or depleting it, which is information no single test can give.

The Realistic Benefit

The most common outcome of acting on a first soil health card is not a dramatic yield jump. It is spending less on one fertiliser, adding one deficient micronutrient, and getting the same or better yield for less money.

On a two to five acre holding, that saving repeats every season, which makes it one of the better returns available for an afternoon of work.

Soil recommendations are specific to your field and crop. Discuss your report with your Krishi Vigyan Kendra or state agriculture department before making significant changes to your fertiliser programme.
