Maize has expanded rapidly in India because it fits many situations — kharif, rabi and spring seasons, irrigated and rainfed, with demand from poultry feed, starch industry and food use. For a small farmer it offers a shorter duration and more flexible market than many alternatives.
Plant Population Decides Yield
Maize responds to plant population more directly than most crops. Each plant generally produces one marketable cob. Too few plants and yield is capped no matter how well you manage them; too many and cobs are small and poorly filled.
Achieving the target population requires uniform spacing and good germination, which means line sowing at the correct depth, not broadcasting. This single change often produces a larger yield improvement than any input.
Recommended spacing differs by season, hybrid and purpose. Get the figures for your hybrid from the seed company literature and cross-check with your KVK.
Field Preparation and Sowing
- Maize does not tolerate waterlogging. Ridge-and-furrow sowing helps considerably in areas with heavy rain — plants sit on the ridge and excess water drains through the furrow
- Sow at moderate depth into moisture. Deep sowing weakens emergence
- Use certified hybrid seed. Saving and re-sowing hybrid seed gives poor and variable results, and is one of the more common avoidable mistakes
- Seed treatment protects against soil-borne pests and diseases at very low cost
Nutrients
Maize is a heavy feeder, particularly of nitrogen. Nitrogen is applied in splits — a basal dose and further doses timed to the knee-high stage and around tasselling, when demand peaks.
Zinc deficiency is common in maize and shows as broad white or pale bands on either side of the midrib of young leaves. It is inexpensive to correct once identified, and soil testing identifies it before the crop shows symptoms.
Water
The critical stages are tasselling and silking, followed by grain filling. Water stress during flowering causes poor pollination and gappy cobs — a distinctive symptom where kernels are missing in patches.
Maize is also intolerant of waterlogging, particularly when young. Drainage matters as much as irrigation in the kharif crop.
Fall Armyworm
This pest arrived in India in 2018 and is now established across maize-growing regions. It feeds inside the whorl of young plants and can cause severe damage quickly.
What to look for
Ragged holes and window-pane damage on young leaves, and moist sawdust-like frass in the whorl. Larvae have a distinctive inverted Y mark on the head and four dots arranged in a square on the second-last segment.
Management that works
- Scout twice a week from emergence. This pest is manageable when caught early and expensive once established
- Pheromone traps to detect moth arrival before damage appears
- Hand-pick and destroy egg masses and larvae on small plots — genuinely effective at low infestation
- Whorl application of recommended products, since the larva sits inside the whorl where a foliar spray does not reach
- Biological options — Bacillus thuringiensis and entomopathogenic fungi, most effective against early larval stages
- Intercropping with a legume, which supports natural enemies
What does not work
Weekly calendar spraying with the same broad-spectrum insecticide. It kills natural enemies, drives resistance, and costs more than the damage it prevents. Follow the economic threshold for your area, available from your KVK, and rotate chemical groups when spraying is justified.
Other Problems
- Stem borer — similar whorl damage, dead hearts
- Turcicum leaf blight — long cigar-shaped grey lesions on leaves
- Lodging — from high nitrogen, shallow roots and wind. Earthing up at the knee-high stage helps considerably
Harvest and Drying
Harvest when the husk has dried and a black layer has formed at the base of the kernel. Dry cobs thoroughly before shelling, and dry grain again after shelling before storage.
Maize is particularly prone to aflatoxin if stored damp. This is a food safety issue and it also destroys market value, since feed buyers test for it. Drying properly is not optional with this crop.
Marketing
Maize has a broader buyer base than most cereals — poultry feed mills, starch units, food processors and mandi traders. Check rates across these channels rather than defaulting to the nearest trader. Feed mills often pay better for well-dried, clean grain of consistent moisture.
