Mustard Cultivation: A Practical Guide for Rabi Season

Mustard is one of the most practical rabi crops for a small farmer with limited irrigation. It needs fewer waterings than wheat, tolerates a degree of salinity, has a short duration, and there is steady demand from oil mills.

Where It Fits

Mustard suits farms where water is the constraint rather than land. In a season where you can guarantee two irrigations but not five, mustard is generally the better decision than wheat — a wheat crop starved of water at critical stages yields poorly, while mustard performs reasonably on limited water.

It also fits well as a rotation break in a cereal-dominated system, and it flowers early enough to be useful for beekeeping.

Sowing Time

Sowing window is important. Sown too early, the crop encounters high temperature at establishment; sown too late, it flowers into rising temperatures and yields poorly. The optimum window is region-specific and available from your KVK.

Late-sown mustard also runs into higher aphid pressure, which is a recurring reason late crops disappoint.

Field Preparation and Sowing

  • Mustard seed is small and needs a fine seedbed with good soil-to-seed contact
  • Sow shallow. Deep sowing is the most common cause of poor emergence in mustard
  • Line sowing rather than broadcasting — it allows thinning, weeding and better light distribution
  • Thin to the recommended plant-to-plant spacing about two to three weeks after emergence. Crowded mustard produces thin plants with few branches

Thinning feels wasteful and is frequently skipped. It should not be. Branching, and therefore pod number, depends on each plant having room.

Nutrients

Mustard responds strongly to sulphur, more than most crops, because sulphur is a component of the oil. Sulphur-deficient mustard yields less and produces lower oil content, which affects the price when sold to a mill.

Many farmers apply nitrogen and phosphorus and ignore sulphur entirely. If your soil test shows low sulphur — and it commonly does — correcting it is one of the more reliable yield gains available in this crop.

Irrigation

The critical stages are pre-flowering and pod formation. If you can give only one irrigation, give it before flowering. If two, add one at pod development.

Avoid irrigating during heavy flowering if strong wind is expected, as the crop lodges easily when the soil is soft and the plants are tall.

Aphids — The Main Threat

Mustard aphid is the single largest yield risk in this crop. Colonies build on the flowering shoots and pods, and heavy infestation can cause severe loss.

Management

  • Scout from the start of flowering. Aphid populations build fast — a field can go from a few colonies to heavy infestation within a week
  • Timely sowing is a genuine control measure, as early-sown crops largely complete flowering before peak aphid pressure
  • Yellow sticky traps assist monitoring
  • Natural enemies — ladybird beetles and syrphid larvae — are effective and are destroyed by broad-spectrum sprays. Check for them before deciding to spray
  • Clip and destroy heavily infested terminal shoots at early infestation on small plots
  • If spraying is justified by the threshold, avoid spraying during peak bee activity. Mustard is an important bee forage and pollination affects your own yield

Other Problems

  • White rust — white blister-like pustules on the underside of leaves, and distorted flower stalks
  • Alternaria blight — dark concentric spots on leaves and pods
  • Sclerotinia stem rot — stems rot and the plant wilts; worse in dense, humid crops

Crop rotation and avoiding excessive plant density reduce all three.

Harvest Timing

This decides whether you keep the yield you grew.

Mustard pods shatter when over-mature. Harvest when the pods have turned yellowish-brown and the seeds inside are firm and have darkened, but before the pods dry to the point of splitting.

Harvest in the early morning while there is still dew on the crop. Cutting in the dry heat of the afternoon causes significant shattering losses in the field.

Stack the harvested crop and allow it to cure for a few days before threshing.

Storage and Sale

Dry the seed properly before storage — oilseeds deteriorate faster than cereals when stored damp, and rancidity affects both quality and price.

Oil mills often pay on oil content. Well-managed, sulphur-sufficient, properly dried seed earns a better rate, which means the practices above pay twice.
