The default pest response on many small farms is to spray on a fixed schedule, whether or not a pest is present. It feels like insurance. In practice it is the most expensive possible approach, and over a few seasons it makes the problem worse.
Integrated Pest Management is not organic farming and it does not ban chemicals. It is a decision sequence: prevent first, monitor constantly, use the least disruptive control that works, and reach for a chemical only when the pest population actually justifies the cost.
Why Calendar Spraying Backfires
Broad-spectrum insecticides kill natural enemies — spiders, ladybird beetles, parasitic wasps, predatory bugs — along with the target pest. Natural enemy populations recover more slowly than pest populations do. The result is a field where pests rebound faster than the things that eat them, and the next outbreak is worse than the last.
Resistance is the second effect. Repeated exposure to the same chemical group selects for survivors. This is why farmers find themselves increasing dose and frequency to get the same result they used to get from a single spray.
Step One: Prevention
- Resistant varieties. The cheapest pest control there is. Ask your KVK which varieties carry resistance to the problems common in your area.
- Sowing time. Adjusting the sowing window by a week or two can move the vulnerable crop stage out of alignment with the pest’s peak. This is highly local knowledge — your extension officer will know it.
- Field sanitation. Remove and destroy crop residue that harbours pests, and control weeds that act as alternate hosts.
- Summer ploughing. Exposing soil to sun kills pupae and soil-dwelling stages.
- Rotation. Breaking the host sequence starves specialist pests.
Step Two: Monitoring
You cannot make a spray decision without knowing what is in the field. Walk the crop twice a week.
How to scout
Walk a zigzag pattern. At ten spots, examine five plants each. Look under leaves, not just on top — most eggs and early larvae are on the underside. Note what you find and roughly how many.
Traps
- Pheromone traps — species-specific, catch adult male moths, and tell you when egg laying has started. Four to five per acre for monitoring.
- Yellow sticky traps — for whitefly, aphids and leaf miners.
- Light traps — for general night-flying insect activity.
Traps are early-warning tools. Their value is telling you a spray is needed now rather than two weeks from now, which is usually the difference between one application and three.
Step Three: Economic Threshold
Every pest has a population level below which the damage costs less than the spray. Spraying below that level loses money twice — the cost of the chemical and the cost of the natural enemies killed.
Threshold levels are crop-specific and pest-specific, and they are published by state agriculture universities for major crops. Get the figures for your crops from your KVK and write them down. This one page of numbers changes spray decisions more than anything else in IPM.
Step Four: Non-Chemical Controls
Mechanical
Hand-picking large larvae and egg masses is genuinely effective on small plots and on early infestations. Bird perches at 10 to 15 per acre invite insectivorous birds into the field.
Biological
Trichogramma parasitoid cards for stem borers and fruit borers, Bacillus thuringiensis for caterpillars, and entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria and Metarhizium are available through KVKs and agricultural universities. Timing matters — these work on early stages and are far less effective once larvae are large.
Botanical
Neem-based products act as antifeedants and growth disruptors. They are slower than synthetic insecticides and need better coverage, but they spare most natural enemies.
Trap crops
Marigold around a tomato plot draws Helicoverpa away from the main crop. Castor at the border of a groundnut field concentrates Spodoptera egg laying where it can be destroyed.
Step Five: Chemicals, Used Properly
When a chemical is justified:
- Identify the pest correctly first. The wrong chemical for the pest is money burned.
- Choose a selective product over a broad-spectrum one where available.
- Follow the label dose exactly. Higher doses do not work better; they accelerate resistance.
- Rotate chemical groups between applications, not just brand names. Different brands often contain the same active ingredient.
- Spray in early morning or late evening, when pollinators are less active and evaporation is lower.
- Observe the pre-harvest interval on the label. This is a food safety requirement, not a suggestion.
Safety
Pesticides are poisons. Wear full-sleeved clothing, gloves and a mask. Never spray against the wind. Never eat, drink or smoke while spraying. Wash thoroughly afterwards and wash spray clothing separately. Store containers locked and away from food and children, and never reuse an empty pesticide container for any purpose.
If anyone shows symptoms after exposure — nausea, dizziness, excessive salivation, difficulty breathing — get them to a doctor immediately and take the pesticide label or container with you so the doctor knows the active ingredient.
The Realistic Result
Farms that adopt IPM properly typically reduce the number of sprays substantially rather than eliminating them. The saving comes from not spraying when nothing is there, catching outbreaks early when one application is enough, and preserving the natural enemies that suppress the next generation.
