A meaningful share of what Indian farms produce never reaches a consumer. It is lost between the field and the market — to moisture, insects, rodents, poor handling and rushed selling. For a small farmer, cutting those losses is often easier and cheaper than raising yield by the same amount.
There is a second, larger benefit. A farmer who can store safely does not have to sell in the week after harvest, when everyone else is selling and prices are at their lowest point of the year.
Moisture Is the Main Enemy
Almost every storage problem starts with grain that was not dry enough. Insects breed faster in moist grain, fungi grow, and heating begins inside the heap.
Grain for storage generally needs to be dried to a low moisture level — the exact target differs by crop, and your KVK will give you the figure for what you grow. What matters is that it must be genuinely dry, not merely surface-dry from a few hours in the sun.
Practical drying
- Dry on a clean paved surface or tarpaulin, never on bare soil
- Spread in a thin layer and turn several times a day
- Cover at night — grain reabsorbs moisture from night air
- Do not seal grain into storage while it is still warm from the sun; let it cool first
The bite test
Field practice for cereals: bite a grain. If it breaks cleanly with a sharp crack, it is dry. If it dents or feels soft, it needs more drying. This is rough but useful when no moisture meter is available. Moisture meters are available at many KVKs and procurement centres.
Cleaning Before Storage
Remove chaff, broken grain, weed seeds, soil and crop debris. Broken grain and dust attract insects and hold moisture. Winnowing and sieving before storage takes an hour and prevents problems that take months to develop.
Storage Structures
Traditional improved bins
Metal bins, brick-and-plaster structures and improved versions of traditional mud bins all work when they are genuinely airtight and raised off the floor. The two failure points are ground contact, which lets moisture in from below, and gaps at the lid, which let insects in.
Hermetic bags
Multi-layer airtight bags work by sealing the grain so that respiration inside consumes the available oxygen. Insects present in the grain die without any chemical. They are reusable for several seasons if handled carefully and not punctured.
The critical requirement is that the grain must be dry before sealing. Sealing moist grain in an airtight bag creates ideal conditions for mould.
Warehouse storage with a receipt
Registered warehouses store grain professionally and issue a negotiable warehouse receipt. That receipt can be used to raise a loan against the stored produce, which means a farmer can meet immediate cash needs without selling at the post-harvest price trough. Ask at your district agriculture office or your bank which registered warehouses operate in your area.
Keeping Rodents Out
- Raise storage structures on a platform, at least 30 cm off the ground
- Fit metal rat guards on any supporting posts
- Keep the storage area clear of spilled grain and vegetation
- Seal gaps in walls and around doors — a rat gets through a gap the size of its skull
- Do not store grain in the same space where animal feed is kept loose
Vegetables and Fruit
Perishables follow different rules. The main points that make a difference on a small farm:
- Harvest at the right maturity. Over-mature produce has a much shorter life.
- Harvest in the cool hours — early morning or evening. Field heat shortens shelf life considerably.
- Shade immediately. Produce left in the sun after harvest loses more quality in two hours than in the following two days.
- Grade before transport. One rotting fruit spreads to the crate.
- Use crates, not sacks, for anything that bruises. The saving on a sack is lost several times over at the mandi.
Simple evaporative cool chambers — a double brick wall with wet sand between — can hold temperature meaningfully below ambient for a modest construction cost. Designs are available through KVKs and horticulture departments.
Monitoring Stored Grain
Check stored grain once a month. Push your hand deep into the heap: if it feels warm, something is happening inside and the grain needs to be inspected and possibly re-dried. Look for insect activity, webbing and a musty smell.
Catching a problem in month two means re-drying a batch. Discovering it in month six often means losing it.
The Financial Point
The gap between the post-harvest price and the price two to four months later is, in many crops and many years, larger than the entire margin on the crop. A farmer who can store safely captures part of that gap. A farmer who cannot must sell into the weakest market of the year, every year.
That is the real return on storage, and it is why storage investment often pays back faster than input investment.
